Know the Signs of Heat Stress in Dogs
Excessive panting or drooling
Lethargy
Vomiting or diarrhea
Confusion or staggering
Important —certain breeds like brachycephalic dogs (short-faced dogs like bulldogs and boxers, etc), double-coated dogs (think Siberian huskies and German shepherds, etc) are at increased risk of heatstroke.
Senior dogs and puppies are also more vulnerable to heatstroke.
Hot Weather Do’s and Don’ts
DO:
✅ Walk your dog early in the morning or close to sunset
✅ Keep fresh, cool water available at all times
✅ Provide shade when outdoors
✅ Use cooling mats, fans, or wet towels
DON’T:
🚫 Leave your dog in the car (even for a minute!)
🚫 Walk them on hot pavement or asphalt (use the 7 second hand test!)
🚫 Shave double-coated breeds (double coats help regulate temperature and protect them from the sun!)
🚫 Exercise your dog during the hottest part of the day (overheating and dehydration can come on fast!)
